EVERWEST DEVOTIONAL #10 | God's Provision
Scripture
"So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” – Matthew 6:31-33 (NIV)
Reflection
In the early research and development phase of Everwest, everything hinged on finding the right leather. I had a very specific vision: a premium full-grain, gritty but simple, aniline leather in two colorways. It had to be thick enough to withstand the heat of branding irons without warping, yet supple enough to be crafted into bags. Month after month, I ordered, tested, and rejected swatch after swatch. Then finally, I found it, the Roughman leather. It checked every box. The look, the feel, the durability, it was exactly what I had hoped for… except for one critical flaw. It only came in brown, not black.
Out of leather options and with no clear path forward, I tried to force a solution. I settled for “close enough,” choosing the only other black leather that seemed to meet most of my standards. On paper, it worked. In reality, it didn’t. Once production began, the flaws were obvious. Too thick, too rigid, impossible to work with at scale. After months of striving in my own strength, I was right back where I started, discouraged and out of options. In that moment, I finally released control and placed the problem back in God’s hands, asking for His wisdom, discernment, and help.
The very next day, I called the tannery again to explain the situation. There was a pause on the other end of the line. Then she said, “What a coincidence, we just started producing Roughman leather in black, yesterday.”
Yesterday.
After months of searching. After dead ends. After I ran out of alternatives. God’s provision arrived not early, not late, but exactly on time. “Would you like me to send you a sample?” she asked. In that moment, it was impossible to miss, what I couldn’t force in my own strength, God had already prepared in His perfect timing.
In Matthew 6:31–33, Jesus tells us not to worry about what we lack or how things will work out. He knows our tendency to fixate on outcomes, timelines, and security. Instead, He invites us to shift our focus: “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Provision flows not from anxiety or control, but from alignment. When we place God first above our plans, fears, and perceived needs, He faithfully takes care of what we cannot.
So wherever you are today, maybe discouraged, exhausted or staring at a dead end, let this be a reminder to lift your eyes. God is not surprised by your situation, and He is not late. He is at work beyond what you can see, calling you to trust Him more deeply and to seek Him more fully. As you pursue His Kingdom first, rest in the promise that He will provide exactly what you need, exactly when you need it, all for His glory.
Application
- Where in your life right now do you feel like you've "hit a wall" and need God's provision?
- How might God be inviting you to trust His timing instead of forcing your own solution?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are a God who provides, always in Your timing, always in ways beyond what we can imagine. Forgive us for the times we try to force our own solutions instead of humbling ourselves and trusting You. Help us to rest in the promise that You will supply all our needs according to Your will. Give us peace to wait on You and faith to trust that You are working, even when we cannot see. In Jesus’ name, amen.
