Scripture
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see… By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” - Hebrews 11:1, 8 (NIV)
Reflection
When I felt God’s calling for me to pursue Everwest full time, I didn’t expect His call to come so clearly, or so soon. My plan was to keep things safe and predictable: build Everwest on the side, keep my stable job, and run Everwest from afar. It felt responsible. It felt wise. But faith doesn’t always look like logic.
God wasn’t asking me for a well-structured business plan or a safety net. He was asking for trust, wholehearted, uncomfortable, full-surrender trust. He made it clear that this wasn’t about part-time obedience, it was about full faith.
Yet even with the conviction I felt from God to leave my job (last week’s devotional), doubt crept in. I had never heard from God so directly before. A few days after that experience I began to wonder, what if this wasn’t God at all? What if these were merely my own thoughts? What if this was the devil's work to sabotage my career?
In that uncertainty, I turned to prayer “Lord, if this is You, if this calling is from You, please confirm it. I don’t want to mistake the enemy’s whisper for Your voice.”
That night, by His doing, I found myself reading the story of Gideon in Judges 6–8. Israel was under ruthless oppression, and when the people cried out for help, God appeared to Gideon, a man who saw himself as the weakest of his clan, to deliver them. Even after witnessing an angel perform a miracle right before his eyes, Gideon still wrestled with doubt, questioning whether he was truly capable of what God was asking him to do.
Still uncertain, lacking faith, Gideon asked God for another sign as confirmation, and God graciously answered. Like Gideon, I had seen God move and knew what He was asking of me, yet I still battled doubt and fear. And just as He did with Gideon, God met me there, with patience, peace, and confirmation that the calling on my heart was from Him, not from the enemy or my own thoughts.
Faith, as Hebrews says, is “assurance about what we do not see.” It’s obedience before the roadmap appears. Gideon, like Abraham, stepped out not knowing where they were going, only that God was the one leading. I had to do the same.
That step wasn’t just about leaving a career, it was about choosing trust over control. About believing that God’s plan is better than mine, even when it doesn’t make sense. Faith isn’t passive; it’s movement. It’s walking forward when your eyes can’t see the outcome but your spirit knows Who’s calling you there.
Application
This week, ask yourself:
- Where might God be asking me to take a step of faith even when I can't see the full picture?
- Am I trusting in my own understanding, or in His promises?
- What "safe" areas of my life am I clinging to instead of surrendering fully to Him?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to trust You the way Abraham and Gideon did, to move when You say “go,” even when the destination is unclear. When I doubt, remind me that faith isn’t about knowing every detail, it’s about knowing You. Strengthen my heart to walk in obedience, to trade comfort for courage, and to believe that Your plans are better than anything I could build on my own. May my life and my work always reflect a faith that moves. In Jesus’ name, amen.
